Weekly Photo Challenge: One Shot, Two Ways (Garden of the Gods)

In Colorado Springs, there’s a park called Garden of the Gods. There are a lot of interesting rock formations in the area, caused… by… uh… geological stuff… haha

Well while I was there, there was a particular rock that I thought was interesting. I tried to capture it in different ways and ended up with a horizontal and vertical shot, like this week’s photo challenge.

In the horizontal version, you can see another large rock in the background. That one’s actually huge, like a small hill.

The vertical one is from a slightly different angle, you can’t see the huge rock but you can see another dead(?) tree in the foreground.

What do you think? Which photo intrigues you more?

Thank you.

  1. Great shots! I like both of them. The rock looks much more substantial in the first photo, and the contrast with the sky, clouds and (dead?) tree in the second is very interesting! I visited Garden of the Gods for the first time two years ago and loved it!

  2. That’s a nice interpretation of the challenge, I love the scale you used in the images with the trees, nice job

I’m inviting you to join us for Travel Photo Mondays, it runs the whole week starting on Mondays, come link up with us.

  3. I like both, but maybe the second one is more intriguing to me. The larger amount of empty space (the sky), making the dead tree standout, plus the fact that with this framing, there’s a feeling of something hidden around, maybe a small path behind, or beyond the edges of the picture… You see a bit of the top of the second tree, you see that it is partially hidden from view, and it makes you wonder: what else is hidden behind that big bump?
while the first one there’s too much rock and the tree doesn’t really stand out, its leaves merge with the green background a bit. Actually the rock pile and the small tree stand out equally, it’s harder to see exactly what it is that caught your attention and made you take the picture.
